May 2, 2010 - Person in the Mirror

As I watch this whole oil spill unfold, I can’t help but think about a response I got from one of my e-mails.  I forwarded a message of concern about drilling in the gulf.  I got several responses of, “Drill baby drill”, but one jerk responded, “I hope they drill ON the beach.”  Well, looks like he’s going to have his oil on the beach.

There is not a lot that we’re going to be able to do to stop this spill but maybe it’s a wake up call to stop the madness!  We are a nation dependent on oil.  Most of it is foreign oil.  We send our money to the people who hate us the most.  Now we’re dumping 210,000 gallons A DAY of the stuff in our gulf.  Why do we still not get it?  I’m probably more of a green fanatic than most people, but even if your not into the green thing, what about the dependence on foreign oil?  It’s bringing the country down.

Personally, I have done several things to reduce my dependence and I have a lot more to do.  I have cut my power bill by about $200.00 per month by installing solar hot water and a variable speed pool pump (Anclote Power Plant is fueled by oil).  I replaced two of the most power hungry appliances in my house (We already had an energy efficient refrigerator and washer/dryer).  I still drive an F-250 and that’s a problem that will be resolved as soon as is practical.  One of the reasons I drive the F-250 is that I don’t want to be driving a little go-cart and get creamed by some other F-250.  But, I am doing something.  Are you?

I can’t understand why all new homeowners are not offered solar water heaters, heat pump water heaters, solar attic fans, etc, etc,.  I can’t understand why it’s not mandatory in new homes.  I truly do not care who they buy it from.  I’d gladly have the business but my focus is definitely on the bigger picture.  I think it’s more of a responsibility.  Most of the new homeowners that we visit are disappointed because they were not offered many of the energy saving options and didn’t know what was available.

I guess we could wait for the Republocrats to solve the problems.  They’re doing a pretty good job….  NOT!  Here’s an idea…  Start with the person in the mirror.

I’m sure I’ll get some comments back telling me what I can do with my opinion.  Maybe some will punish me by taking away business because I have the audacity to throw these blogs out there.  But honestly, I’m almost 50 years old and I’m thinking about the bigger picture.  I want to do my little part to help fix this problem and I’m hoping that anyone who reads this will do their little part as well.

Respectfully,
