Solar water heating is a good investment and it is good for the planet, but it's not the best water heating solution for everybody. If you use a lot of hot water and you have roof space available facing South, South East, or South West, then you're probably a good candidate. If you are a one or two person household and do not use a lot of hot water, then there are other environmentally responsible solutions that may better suit your needs such as a tankless water heater. In some cases, you may want both a solar water system AND a tankless water system as a booster.

What to expect:

A typical system consists primarily of an 80 gallon storage tank and a 4’ x 10’ roof mounted solar panel. The 80 gallon storage tank is normally installed in place of your existing water heater.   A common misconception is that Solar Hot Water systems are similar to Solar PV (Photovoltaic Power Generating) systems in that they are extremely expensive, complicated, and that the pay back is 15 or more years.  The truth is, the Solar Hot Water system is by far less expensive than a Solar PV system, is very simple, and even if the Solar PV system pricing comes down, you will still need a Solar Hot Water system in addition to a Solar PV system.  The fact is, if you are committed to decreasing the size of your carbon footprint, and you would like to save money, you will eventually want both systems.  It does not make sense to use Solar PV to power an electric water heater.  Solar Hot Water is your first move and the savings start NOW.
